January 20th at 0º 08’ degrees.
February 18th at 29º 59 degrees.
Though it’s pitch dark at the New Moon, its pull is strong physically (with tides and our own waters) and symbolically. It’s the Dark Moon, when the star canopy above is most visible. It’s a perigee (close to Earth) Moon, so a kind of Supermoon, but of the New Moon kind.
The surf is up, to ride new waves. Aquarius whispers to go beyond, see into deep space….invite surprises.
Lucid Dreaming – January 20th
My eye spies here (in the chart) the first in two-for of Aquarian initiations.
New Moons are passageways of change — this lunation is buzzing with potential for crystal clear sight, a rousing influx of fresh currents and jolts that wake us up further.
Aquarius is the sign of freedom, and that’s in part because of the gift of heightened awareness. When we are discouraged, our field of vision narrows, and then feel powerless and bogged down — a loop that can feed on itself.
There’s a constellation of Aquarius planets (Sun and Moon, Mercury, Venus) for an atmosphere of the crowd restless for more. There can be a social frisson, and quick playing off each other, in the quest for a vision worth living and fighting for.
To intensify the urgent visioning, Mercury turns retrograde in Aquarius the next day (January 21st). What kind of soul storming will we all get up to? With Mercury in Aquarius, it’s about seeing beyond and without presumptions of what’s been accepted. That’s why Aquarius has the rep for being a rebel, because they are loyal to the vision, not to the laws, codes or local ordinances of the day.
There’s potent sparking, too, along the path of awakening, for individuals and all of us. Aquarius’ ruler Uranus (the awakener) is exact to the Dragon’s Tail or South Node. That’s a zap to inherited gifts and knowings — like the conviction that each person, and every living thing has inherent value and rights. And that any philosophy that warps that falls short.
So at this first of two Aquarius New Moons, there can be a snapping out of trances, the kind that pit us against each other or imprison us in small mindsets. In what can be called a battle for the future, the vitalized individual is set free.
Aqua Infusion – February 18th
The second Aquarius New Moon happens at 29º 59, a hair’s breath from the next sign Pisces. See the chart. Any mental scaffolding that was loosened at the first New Moon, can be dissolved, with so much Neptunian energy in play.
Another stand-out feature is that Saturn and Neptune come into their square, while Uranus and Pluto are also waxing to an exact tension point (square).
Aquarius brings the energy of scrambling (Uranus), but also of establishing a new order (Saturn). There can be some dramatic waves of waking up, that are unsettling, but also freeing.
I was drawn to an article called The Undistorted Power of Attention by Soren Dreier. It begins, “Our attention is the most powerful instrument we have: That’s why everybody wants it.” And later, “Lots of people are saying: My life is a mess. What they really are saying is: I cant focus my attention. Because the minute they do, order will come into place.”
