A Monk came to a village and saw that a Tiger was tyrannizing the people.
The Monk decided to teach him about harmlessness and benevolence.
Time would pass and the Monk met the tiger once more.
This once beautiful creature was undernourished, hurt and scarred.
The Monk asked the Tiger what had happened.
The tiger said that he had taken the teaching of harmlessness to heart and had stopped tyrannizing the village. But because he was no longer feared, the people now threw rocks at him and bullied him, and he was afraid to leave his cave to go search for food.
The Monk said:
‘I did teach about harmlessness and benevolence,
but where kindness is mistaken for weakness
you can sharpen your claws and tell them that their years have haste.’
